The first time I saw Taína perform, I was moved by how forceful her voice was-how her calls and chants could fill the entire room. It was clear she had trained as a vocalist and had equal knowledge of the politics she included in her work. Then I was thrilled to see that she had copies of books of her poetry that she had made herself. Every young girl writer, in particular girl of color writer, should see someone like Taína do her art-political work. Taína ignites people to action by stirring their consciousness with her political prose. She makes the revolution personal to her audiences by reaching the warrior within each of us. The first poem I heard Taína perform publicly was one of her most well known, a poem about her grandmother in Puerto Rico. Each of us in the audience was rapt, thinking of a dear family member of our own who had nurtured us as her grandmother did to her. She then connected her grandmother to the land, the spirit of Puerto Rico, making the need for each of us to fight for Puerto Rico's independence and sovereignty so individually felt, and so uniquely linked together. She is a bright example of a revolutionary who can teach and lead by the example of her extraordinary talent.
